The Crew
It’s always a shame when a show gets cancelled, especially when it’s a show that you really like. Great News was a show that unfortunately only ran for two seasons before it was unceremoniously dumped by NBC, and it’s a real shame because it was a really funny show. So why was Great News cancelled?
The short answer is that the ratings just weren’t there. The first season of Great News averaged 4 million viewers per episode, which is pretty good for a comedy on NBC. However, the ratings dropped in the second season to an average of 3 million viewers per episode, which is not so good.
Part of the problem might have been that Great News was never really given a chance to find its audience. It was moved around the schedule a lot, and it never really had a consistent time slot. It also didn’t help that NBC didn’t really seem to know how to promote the show.
Another problem might have been that Great News was simply too niche for NBC’s target demographic. The show was about a TV news producer who discovers that her mother has been interning at her station, and it didn’t really fit in with NBC’s other comedies like The Office or Parks and Recreation.
So those are some of the reasons why Great News was cancelled. It’s a real shame because it was a really funny show that deserved better than it got.
The Ratings
Great News was an American television sitcom that aired on NBC from April 25, 2017 to June 28, 2018. The series starred Briga Heelan, Andrea Martin, Adam Campbell, Horatio Sanz, Nicole Richie, and John Michael Higgins. The series was created by Tracey Wigfield and produced by Aaron Kaplan, Dana Honor, and Hail Mary Jane Productions.
The series follows Katie (Briga Heelan), an up-and-coming news producer who finds out her overbearing mother (Andrea Martin) has been hired as an intern at the station where she works.
The series was cancelled on May 10, 2018, after two seasons. The cancellation came as a surprise to many fans of the show, as the show had been well-received by critics and had averaged a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic in its second season.
There are many theories as to why Great News was cancelled. One theory is that the ratings simply weren’t good enough. The show averaged a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic in its second season, which was lower than what NBC had hoped for. Additionally, the ratings for the show declined throughout its second season. Another theory is that NBC simply didn’t have room for another comedy on its schedule and decided to cancel Great News in order to make room for other shows. Finally, some have speculated that NBC was not happy with the direction that the show was going in its second season and decided to cancel it as a result.
The Aftermath
After being cancelled, Great News was quickly forgotten by most people. The show had a very small cult following, but it was nothing compared to the popularity of other NBC sitcoms. Many people believe that the cancellation was due to low ratings, but there are other factors that may have contributed to the show’s demise.
One reason why Great News may have been cancelled is because it was seen as too similar to other shows on NBC. The network already had a successful sitcom about a news station (The Office) and another about a TV network (30 Rock). Great News didn’t offer anything new or innovative that would make it stand out from the other shows.
Another possibility is that Great News was simply too weird for mainstream audiences. The show had a lot of quirks and idiosyncrasies that made it difficult for some viewers to follow. This may have turned off potential viewers and led to low ratings.
It’s also possible that NBC simply didn’t believe in the long-term potential of Great News. The ratings were never impressive, and the show didn’t seem to be catching on with viewers. NBC may have decided to cut its losses and cancel the show before it became a drain on resources.
Whatever the reasons for its cancellation, Great News will likely be remembered as a odd footnote in NBC’s history. It’s a shame that the show didn’t get more time to find its audience, but sometimes these things just don’t work out.
