Ownership
Most people know that NBC is owned by Comcast and MSNBC is a subsidiary of NBC. But that’s not the whole story. In fact, there are three companies involved in the ownership and operation of MSNBC: Comcast, NBCUniversal, and National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
Comcast is the largest company, with a market capitalization of over $200 billion. They are the primary owners of both NBC and MSNBC. Comcast acquired NBC in 2011 for $13.8 billion. In addition to owning several other television networks, Comcast also owns the film studio Universal Studios and the theme park Universal Studios Theme Parks.
NBCUniversal is a subsidiary of Comcast. They own such assets as the cable channels USA Network and Syfy, as well as the film studio Focus Features. NBCUniversal was formed in 2004 when General Electric (GE) merged its NBC television network with Vivendi’s film and television assets. GE owned 80% of the new company, with Vivendi owning 20%. In 2011, Comcast acquired a 51% stake in NBCUniversal from GE, with GE retaining a 49% stake. In 2013, Comcast completed its full acquisition of NBCUniversal, paying $16.7 billion to buy out GE’s remaining stake.
National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) is the actual network that airs MSNBC programming. It is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal. Prior to 2010, it was a wholly owned subsidiary of General Electric (GE).
