It was on a Tuesday in 1978 when Jim Gardner first signed on as an anchor at WPVI, and he’s been with the station ever since.
Action News was just getting started in those days. The 6abc studios were a lot smaller then, and the set was a lot simpler.
But the same standards that Jim upholds today were in place from the very beginning.
“First and foremost, it is to be accurate,” Jim said of the Action News standards. “You have to get it right.”

Jim Gardner has been with Action News since 1974, and is currently the co-anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. broadcasts. He started at WPVI as a general assignment reporter. In 1975, he was promoted to weekend sports anchor and also started filling in as weekday sports anchor. In 1976, he became the weekday sports anchor and continued in that role until 1978, when he was promoted to co-anchor of the 6 p.m. newscast with Dave Roberts. He has been the co-anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts since 1983.

Jim Gardner’s plans after Action News
After spending more than 50 years at Action News, Jim Gardner has announced that he will be stepping down from his role as anchor of the 6pm and 11pm newscasts.
Gardner, who has been with the station since 1966, said in a statement that he will be leaving Action News at the end of May.
“It has been my great honor and privilege to be a part of Action News for so many years,” Gardner said. “I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many talented and dedicated people.”
Gardner said he plans to spend more time with his family and travel after he leaves Action News.
